Secrets

At the time of this series, male nudes were considered to be a taboo subject for photography.  In an attempt to comment on the narrow-mindedness of such a limitation, I made this series of portraits of male “nudes” that exposed another erogenous zone that for me is also significant.  In the animal kingdom, subordinate males will often present their jugular to an alpha male, which in the human realm becomes an expression of both vulnerability and eroticism.  For me, these images address another form of hidden “animal” intimacy that more clearly reveals complex relationships between the representation of sexuality, power and gender bias and the attempt to regulate and control cultural behavior.
